In the beginning of Alexie’s passage, he makes sure the reader knows how he remembers none of the details of his first read. “I cannot recall which particular superman comic book I read, nor can i remember which villain he fought.” What stuck with me is that he makes is clear he cant remember anything about what he read, he just knows he read it. Next he was describing his fathers love for books. he specifically described how his dad had a massive book collection and how much they varied. Being exposed to all of these books at such a young age, in my opinion, either makes you love them, or hate them, no in between. In the last paragraph of the passage Alexie describes, how he had plans of studying for a potential career in pediatrics and randomly because a writer and did not expect it at the least. These specific lines in the passage stuck with me because even though he wasn’t helping the children like he thought he wanted to, he’s now helping them reach their potential, and shatter any stereotype the world has placed on them. Lastly, in Stephen King’s writing, the part that stuck out to me the most was when he wrote bad about Ms. Margitan. She was so deeply offended by him calling her “maggot” instead of her last name. She held a huge grudge. When she saw his name in the list for NHS she denied him, solely because what he referred to her as in the past. “”The honor society didn’t need boys of “his type” she said,”” This one really hit home because you get a real sense of how much a simple word could affect people and how no matter what you say to apologize it will still hurt.
