Teachers make school a bad experience for students. I firmly believe that teachers play a strong role in the success of their students. In an excerpt of Deborah Brandts Sponsors of Literacy she explains that “a sponsor is someone who gives their knowledge and gains something from it.” If the sponsor fails to see the immediate gain from it, or they don’t want to put in the effort of helping someone succeed they will definitely stunt the sponsored persons ability to succeed. Later, Deborah Brandt goes on to talk about why sponsors actually sponsor. Deborah elaborates on the fact that “the sponsored don’t necessarily know why they’re being sponsored.” If a teacher doesn’t see any gain from helping their student than they will not put in the required effort so they could succeed. The student doesnt know the teachers motives but it makes them resent school.

 

A proper sponsor can help a student out of their victim ways. A good sponsor can change how the average student thinks about school. Kara Poe Alexander says that “Students often associate school based literacy with cruelty and even oppression.” To me, the teacher makes it like that. She doesnt help the kids get intrigued by the work. School is often stripping students of their imagination. All of this keeps students disinterested with school. A lot of people like to blame kids hate for school on other things but its really that. But I believe it’s all up to the teacher. Deborah Brandt says in her writing that all sponsors gain from their knowledge. If the teachers, being the sponsors, made school a little more fun or interesting to the students it would be different. If the teachers had an incentive to make school less dismal they would do so. So why can’t they just do it to peak the students interests now and help them become more successful down the line?
